Deoxycorticosterone is defined as a precursor for both aldosterone and corticosterone, leading to increased levels of these adrenal steroids upon administration. Deoxycorticosterone (DOC) is an important metabolite of progesterone that increases tenfold during pregnancy. DOC is a mineralocorticoid receptor agonist. Excessive DOC can lead to a mineralocorticoid excess state and hypertension. DOC excess can arise from adrenal tumors or congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
