DMSO is a polar aprotic solvent widely used in bioconjugation, especially in reactions with poorly water-soluble fluorescent dyes.

DMSO is also recommended as an auxiliary solvent in the reaction mixture when a hydrophobic label is used for protein labeling or when a label molecule needs to be aliquoted before the reaction.
